LOVE Pasta? Try this easy tip for a light, healthy pasta dish
An easy tip to boost nutrition and cut the calories and carbohydrates when eating pasta!
I am a fan of pasta. Spaghetti and meatballs was a regular dish on the menu at home when I was a kid, and to this day it is still one of my favorite dinners.
At that time of course I never even thought twice about calories and carbohydrates, nor did I care about the fact that there was only a tiny amount of vegetable on my plate when I was a kid. But now I do.
Now I am obsessed with finding easy ways to boost the nutrition and health of a dish, without having to spend hours in the kitchen, and my favorite way to do it with pasta, is by adding spinach.
Spinach Facts
1 cup of fresh spinach has only 7 calories….7 CALORIES!!! So feel free to load up on as much as you like.
It’s packed with vitamins, including vitamin A, C, K and folate, which supports cell production for hair, skin and nails and may protect against cancer.
It also has antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxantin which protect your eyes, and quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory effects and may help protect your body against heart disease.
How much should you use?
With pasta, I typically add a full bag or container of spinach to the sauce at the end of cooking, so it just slightly wilts.
If you don’t think your family is ready for this much spinach with their pasta just yet, then you can add it straight to your bowl. Grab a couple of good handfuls, and heat it for about 20 seconds in the microwave
Add it to a serving of pasta – ½ cup is one serving by the way, and this is what it looks like…
And you’re done! An easy, healthy pasta dinner
Great tip Maria! When I have spaghetti, I load the rest of my plate up with greens, cherry tomatoes, and peppers with a nice homemade dressing. It gives me lots to munch on without feeling like I need to go back for seconds, and I can keep the pasta amount down at a proper serving size!
Thanks Eren!
Sounds like you already have a good system as well for keeping things in check. It’s just so easy to overeat pasta, so I’m glad you have a great strategy, and the spinach is so easy to do!
