This first video is in response to Kristi, who asked how she can eat out and stick to her diet!
Eating out is a challenge when we are trying to stay on track with our healthy lifestyle and weight loss goals. Restaurant dishes are notorious for being high in fat and sodium and of course, calories. Does that mean you shouldn’t eat out? Of course not! Food is social and meant to be fun, but if you are trying to make a lifestyle change, which in part includes eating out less, then check out this video where i share with you some great options for eating out!
I get asked all the time what beverages, other than water, can we have that won`t provide the same amount of calories as a meal, but will be refreshing and tasty. Well, there’s no doubt that water is essential, but I understand we need to keep things interesting, and there’s nothing better than having a few options.
Here are 6 refreshing summer drinks for you to try that are very low in sugar and calories, naturally refreshing and super satisfying.
splash of lime juice & soda water
water or perrier with frozen raspberries
herbal tea, hot or cold
mint leaves, sliced lemon & fresh ginger in water
splash cranberry juice, splash orange juice & soda water
sliced orange & lemon in water
My favorite is the water with ice cubes with a splash of orange and cranberry juice-yum!
Peanut Butter on Toast is yesterday`s news…have it on a Tortilla!
I`m a big fan of peanut butter and tortillas, so for those of you who love it too, you`ll definitely enjoy this super simple snack. Now you may have heard that you shouldn`t eat too much peanut butter because it is high in fat and calories, but as long as you’re not eating it straight from the jar, don’t worry! A small amount can go a long way. The dollop of peanut butter in the picture is 1 tbsp. Instead of having it on toast however, i`ve taken a whole wheat tortilla and cut it into quarters. What you see here is 1/2 a large tortilla. The great thing about using tortillas instead of regular bread, is it is has about the same amount of protein and fibre you get from 2 slices of bread but only has the calories of about 1 slice. So basically, you can have 2 pieces of the tortilla for 1 slice of bread. So it feels way more satisfying, and it’s something different!
A good target for snacks-usually I suggest aiming for about 100-200 calories for snacks between meals
PB on 2 pieces of tortilla – 185 calories (compared to PB on 2 pieces of toast – 300 calories)
Spring is here, which means summer is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to get your body back on track with your health and wellness goals, and you may be thinking about trying a Detox.
But first of all, what exactly is a Detox? Basically, Detox diets are touted as a way to remove toxins from the body. You may be thinking, doesn`t our body already do that for us? The answer is yes. Our liver, kidneys, lungs, colon, and lymphatic system are all responsible for detoxifying our bodies. The question however that still remains for many is with all the toxins we come into contact with, whether it is the pesticide residues on fruit and vegetables or air pollution, can our bodies handle it all, or do our bodies need a little help?
Well, based on the research, Detoxs are not yet scientifically proven. There isn`t enough evidence to say that Detox diets are essential for health. Does this mean you shouldn`t do one? It depends. Many are extremely restrictive, and others require you take supplements or laxatives which may or may not be appropriate for you.
Then there are Detox diets that emphasize foods that will naturally cleanse the body, and focuses on consuming adequate fluid to help support your body`s natural detoxification system in flushing the toxins. These Detoxs are the ones I’m a fan of.
A Natural Detox The type of Detox I recommend is one that focuses on natural foods that are unrefined, rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients and fibre, and includes adequate fluids-specifically water- 9 cups of fluid for women, and 13 cups for men according to the Dietary Reference Intakes. Keep in mind, if it is hot where you live, or you are active, your needs are higher. If you want to take it a step further, particularly if you think you have food allergies but haven`t yet figured out what you are sensitive to, you can also give your body a break from the foods that research suggests tend to be more allergenic, specifically
Peanuts
Eggs
Milk
Tree nuts
Wheat
Soy
Sesame seeds
Seafood
Sulphites
Mustard
Try following this type of Detox for 2 weeks and see how you feel. 14 days is enough to notice a difference in how you feel and see if it works for you, plus it is easier to commit 100% when it is for a set period of time, vs…FOREVER.
